Over the last 6 years, my work with indigenous people has provided me with real insight as to how we can help indigenous communities to thrive.
I’m very passionate about how my Whole of Community Change program sees those within the community becoming instrumental in influencing change. Involving everyone… from kids, to parents, elders (no one is left behind), creates a fantastic foundation for long-term success.
Given my hands-on experience within these communities, it comes as no surprise to me to read that indigenous businesses are 100 times more likely to employ indigenous people.
With that in mind, consider this:
In 2012-2013, the Commonwealth Government spent $39 billion on goods and services with less than one per cent going to indigenous businesses. It goes without saying this is a less than ideal scenario. We need to be supportive of indigenous businesses and helping more indigenous people to find jobs in the workforce.
Off the back of this, it’s incredibly positive to see the Australian Government’s new targets spanning from 2019-2020. A target of awarding three per cent of new Commonwealth contracts to indigenous people has now been set and will be monitored to ensure these yearly targets are met.
This is a great step forward for indigenous communities. After all, I’m a big believer in communities collaborating with both the government and strategic partners to enact positive change.
Take away all of the stats and negotiations, at the end of the day, this is why I love doing what I do!
